What I realised from being involved in the Ethnocultural Department is the stark differences and comforting similarities between self-identifying people of colour. I always felt that I was alone in navigating the ‘great, wide world,’ especially being a woman of colour from Rwanda, but since joining last year, the Ethnocultural collective has shared the majority of my experiences. I’ve learned about and experienced many amazing cultures from being in the Department, and I want to continue to invite other cultures and intersectionalities to engage with us.

As Deputy Officer, I’m aiming to create a welcoming and comfortable place for self-identifying people of colour to pursue ideas for campaigns and events. I believe in constructive and positive progress, and hope that through Ethnocultural Week, we’re able to encourage the wider ANU community to ponder and experience other cultures, practices, and beliefs.

It frustrates me that sometimes I can be reduced to being thought of as less successful or deserving of an opportunity than another because of my physical appearance (it still happens, believe it or not). There’s a lot more to a person than their physical appearance and cultural background, and that’s what the Department aims to show through Ethnocultural Week. I hope to see you there!"
