Australia: A Multicultural Success Story?
Is Australia a truly multicultural society, or is our cultural policy only skin-deep? What does a truly multicultural society look like? Is multiculturalism even a good thing to aim for?
Join us as we aim to anwer some of these questions with our line-up of incredible ANU academics - Dr. Asmi Wood, Professor Jacqueline Lo and Dr. Meera Ashar.
Dr. Asmi Wood is an Associate Professor at the ANU College of Law, and is the force behind transforming ANU's Indigenous Law Program. His current research lies in constitutional recognition for Indigenous people, as well as Indigenous participation in tertiary education. As a Torres Strait Islander Muslim, Dr. Wood has an incredible story and insight to share.
Professor Jacqueline Lo is Associate Dean (International) for the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on issues of race, colonialism, diaspora and the interaction of cultures and communities across ethnic, national and regional borders. Jacqueline has considerable experience in the areas of education and cultural policy, cultural diplomacy and management in the tertiary sector.
Dr. Meera Ashar is a Lecturer at the School of Culture, History and Language, Deputy Director of the South Asia Research Institute (SARI), as well as the current convenor of the Honours program of the College of Asia and the Pacific. Her work addresses questions about identity, self-representation, colonialism and postcolonialism.
This event will be moderated by the incredible Suchara Fernando. Suchara is in her 5th year of uni, and is undergoing an Asian Studies/Laws degree. She enjoys copious amounts of coffee, analysing pop-culture, race politics and Beyonce.
