How Can You Dismantle White Supremacy In Universities?

Racism is an organised system of oppression and power that advantages certain individuals and groups in society, and disadvantages others. The legacies of colonialism, violence and intergenerational trauma are embedded within our institutions, including universities, and continue to drive inequities across all aspects of society.
Despite the fact that universities are putting out statements promoting ‘diversity and inclusion’ or pledging to ‘do better’, these condemations about racism in the community are hollow in the face of a persistently unequal playing field.
It is time for racial justice movements to take their course in Australian universities. Change will only come with a genuine interrogation of the institutional norms, practices and policies that continually disadvantage Bla(c)k, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) students, staff, academia and university leaders.
This panel is the first of many as part of the Are You Racist ANU? Movement*. We will be discussing how white supremacy manifests itself in universities, how we can dismantle it, why it is so important to do so amidst other things.
Panel:
Tim Lo Surdo - Founder and National Director of Democracy in Colour
Dr Angela Martinez -Dy - Founder of Building the Anti-Racist classroom
Dr Virginia Marshall - Inaugral Indigenous Post Doctoral Fellow at the ANU School of Regulation and Global Governance
Moderator:
Niroshnee Ranjan
Are You Racist ANU? is run by the ANU Ethnocultural Department. The purpose of this campaign is to weaponise the power of storytelling to dismantle white supremacy at the Australian National University.
