Town Hall: Bla(c)k Lives Matter
Black Lives Matter is a movement for the liberation of Black people from violence and dehumanisation. From its origin in the United States, it has trickled into Australian discourse and has found fertile soil here, where a genocidal colonial legacy has victimised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders since the British Invasion of this land.
Today, Black Lives Matter stands to protect these communities as well as the more recent African diasporic communities who are also victims of racism in Australia.
This Town Hall will ask you questions such as these:
What does BLM mean?
What does Black liberation look like?
How is Australia different from the US in the historical context of BLM?
How can we best support the Australian iteration of BLM?
We define Bla(c)k as encompassing sub-Saharan African descent and/or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
We invite all students who identify as Bla(c)k or Indigenous to speak on this issue freely.
Non-Bla(c)k or Indigenous people are encouraged to listen, but if you do not identify as Bla(c)k or Indigenous you will not be offered the microphone (literally and figuratively).
