Yoga with Dr. Shameem Black

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. After an hour-long session of yoga, we welcome Dr. Shameem Black to explain the origins of yoga and its importance in Indian culture and Hinduism. This event is free and open to all.

Dr. Shameem Black is a Fellow in the Department of Gender, Media and Cultural Studies, School of Culture, History and Language. Her current book project, tentatively titled India's Newest Pose, looks at the changing imaginative life of one of India’s foremost cultural exports: yoga. It examines contemporary Indian attempts to harness yoga for soft power.

In doing so, it reveals the challenges and opportunities a rising nation faces when its culture goes global. Trends in globalized popular culture, such as the appearance of a "yoga fiction" genre in bookstores or the rise of yoga-themed videos on the web, show that the state has many competitors when it comes to defining the social and cultural meanings of yoga. These forms of popular culture paradoxically make India both more and less visible in a globalizing world.

This event is a collaboration between Interfaith Festival and the ANU Ethnocultural Week.
