Acknowledgement of Country

The ANU BIPOC Department acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.

BIPOC Officer Report

  1. Bush Week recap

    • Went well despite organisational barriers.

    • Big thank you to everyone involved.

    • Chai and chats, fire pit, mural, black mountain walk, Zine launch!

    • Digital zine will be available.

  2. Ball

    • 16th of August!

    • Ticket sales have both sold out, with 2 more rounds pending

  3. Racism report 

    • Just under 40 survey responses, will need to advertise it more eg., on schmidtposting

    • New post to remind people (Aria)

    • Hopefully responses will be locked in by the end of August

    • Publishing date, 31st October TBD

  4. BASC

    • Daniella stepped down. 

    • Role will need to be filled asap.

    • Elections will be next week or week after depending on how many applications we receive 

    • Another post will go out to remind people

  5. Chalk mural 

    • Was defaced. 

    • ANUSA passed our motion re the mural/ supports us

    • No communication from the ANU regarding the mural being taken down

    • Will had received an email from our vice chancellor regarding the mural saying it violated the poster policy. The BIPOC dept received no communication from this VC.

    • It was taken down by the ANU

    • An official statement will be made by our department 

    • A meeting will occur w head of ANUSA and VC with our officer 

    • The poster policy will be going under review, esp re their inclusion of chalk which is often used by advocacy groups and the BIPOC department.

    • The mural included mentions of Trans support, Indigenous sovereignty etc 

    • Expressed concern that this may be used as a bargaining move to remove BIPOC base.  

    • We have been advised there is basis for a legal case according to ANUSA legal based on unfair discrimination.

Secretary Report

  1. SSP policy (goal for this semester)

    • Aim to revise the SSP, chat to Anenya and Aleesya 

    • Link to mural?

  2. Chat with treasurer re bipoc safe space order

  1. Ball:

  • Ball budget discussion

  • Food budget has doubled following last years food- alcohol ratio 

  • Photo booth

  • Indigenous dept discussion re the Acknowledgment of Country 

  • Total is at current: $10,000

Social Officer Report

  1. Bush week recap

    • Went well aside from mural aftermath

    • Promote the zine

  2. Ball

    • Graphic for the photobooth strip 

    • Good amount of performer EOIs 

    • Will need to figure out what equipment we need to source/ whether ANUSA will need to supervise their equipment 

    • Group chats will need to be made for performers and subcommittee 

    • We are ISO of a dance group

Advocacy Officer Report

  1. August 1st rally:

  • Women’s dept is having a rally at 12pm re SASH

  • ANU policy/ action will be the main point of the rally

  • Anenya is talking at the rally, all are encouraged to attend 

  • Will be speaking from an intersectional standpoint eg, sexualisation of BIPOC women 

  • Speech will aim to be recorded

Publicity Officer Report

  1. Ball

  • Tbd: ticket releases, moodboard, photostrip, housekeeping and lineup post.

  • Can delegate to the sub-committee if needed eg., lineup post

Postgrad Rep Report

  1. Events: 

  • Post grad chai and chats this term & bookclub

  • Panel talk will be pushed back to term 2

  • Women’s Legal Center discussion, re working rights for BIPOC women

  • Times will need to be decided

Budget considerations:

  • Mixer for first years preferably at BIPOC base 

  • Movie night etc 

  • YKB promotion at ball, YKbus. Discuss with BIPOC officer.
