BIPOC Officer Report

  1. Mural update

    • Response posted

    • Received community and department support

    • Reached out to dept vice chancellor re removal of mural with no discussion with BIPOC dept.

    • Response was: a meeting may be set up as soon as possible but did not give a time or date, claiming their intent was not to stop speech. Also mentioned the poster policy and mural policy.

    • Our response: their stated intent does not align with the actions of ANU. Not communicating with the BIPOC department is cause for concern, as is the process behind the mural removal, and the suppression of political speech.

    • A response to this is pending.

    • National Capital Authority of murals is now being used as a reason for removal. Prior it was “discrimination,” the idea that the wall isn't part of the BIPOC base, and the poster policy.

    • Woroni has reached out to us for comment, but we have not given a separate statement. As has the law school, and Palestine Action Group.

    • End goal is that the mural will stay up.

    • The ANU has no official statement regarding the statement “from the river to the sea.” In the case of a permanent mural, we will call for an official ANU statement on the phrase if they do not allow it.

    • May be purpose in reaching out to the National Capital Authority of Murals.
